Cost-effective Tutoring in Tough Economic Times

]]>

In these tough economic times it is important that parents take a realistic look at their finances and create a budget they can stick to. In theory, this is good advice, but often parents are forced to make difficult choices.

Most important are those expenses that absolutely need to be paid, such as rent, car payment, insurance and utilities. Then there are the items that fall into the category of luxury vs. necessity. We all want the best for our children and want to provide whatever help they need to succeed in school. But these days the cost of a weekly private tutor can be prohibitive.

A private one-hour tutoring session costs from $30 – $45 per hour and much more in large cities. The price of taking your child to one of the national learning centers also varies, but you can expect to pay $200 - $400 per month. Fortunately, with the advent of the internet, more affordable options are now available to parents, such as one-on-one online tutoring and online tutoring software companies. Both are a good option for children who enjoy using computers, and they have the added time-saving convenience of learning in the comfort of your home.

Online tutoring is interactive one-on-one tutoring via the Internet. Usually an online diagnostic test is given to determine the kind of help a child needs. Then the child works with a live, online teacher who customizes a study plan based on the results of the diagnostic test. Tutor and student communicate via instant messaging and interactive whiteboards. Sessions run from $20 – $30 per hour, which is less costly than a private tutor. In addition, some online tutoring companies have unlimited tutoring packages which run approximately $150 per month. Many provide money-back guarantees if your child is not satisfied with a session.

Online tutoring software is similar to tutoring with a live tutor except that it is completely software driven and costs significantly less. Most start out with a placement test, after which the child receives an individualized learning plan to meet his or her academic needs. Some have game-like activities and motivational characters that interact with children in a fun and engaging way. Monthly costs vary from $16 - $25. Many have free trials, so the program can be tried for free to see if it works for your child.

These are challenging economic times, but online tutoring programs could be a viable and practical option for parents who want to give their children the extra help they need. Take advantage of a Free Trial offer to see if the program is one your child will benefit from and enjoy. It is definitely worth a try and you have nothing to lose!

What You Need To Look For In Math Tutoring For Algebra Classes

Edit Article |

]]>

When most parents set out to utilize a tutoring service to provide math tutoring or homework help in Algebra for their student, they seldom know what to look for in terms of their student’s specific needs. In other words, they don’t really know if the tutoring service they’ve found will be able to truly help their student excel in a given math class.

In terms of Algebra, the parent should always ask his or her student what he or she is having difficulties understanding or comprehending in the classroom setting. This is crucial to know since the student’s academic difficulties may be rooted in one or more very different sources. These may include, but are not limited to, the student’s learning style, the teacher’s teaching style, class size, difficulty of the material, the student’s study habits, or even yet, material previously missed that may be needed to excel in Algebra.

Once the parent and student have at least tried to target the problem area, it makes it much easier to find a tutoring service that can aid the student in better understanding the many topics of Algebra. There are certain important things that the parent should look for when seeking math tutoring, specifically for Algebra.

The parent should relate the student’s difficulties to the tutoring service and determine whether math tutoring from a particular tutoring service, whether in-home or online, will aid the student in understanding the material. As mentioned above, the student may have difficulties comprehending the material due to the teacher’s teaching style. If this is the case, the parents needs to ensure that the Algebra tutor will facilitate the student’s learning process and work toward getting the student to understand what he or she is covering in Algebra class.

It is also important to ensure that the tutor will cover topics from earlier in the school year that may have been unclear to the student. Many times, algebra tutors tend to focus on homework help without filling in the student’s “mathematical” gaps. These gaps usually include important area such as working with variables, properly graphing equations, and solving multi-step word problems. When these gaps are not addressed in Algebra, they tend to be carried over into Precalculus, which leads to further frustration and anxiety on the student’s part. One should note though that targeted homework help in Algebra can lead to filling in these gaps if done in an effective manner. Remember, just because a student is performing poorly in a given math class such as Algebra, does not mean that he or she is not good in mathematics!

The parent should also try to secure math tutoring in Algebra from a tutoring service well before the student has a quiz, test, exam, or even a major assignment on the material. It should also be noted that a tutor cannot work miracles and having the student cram right before a major quiz or test can lead to more frustration on the student’s part since his or her results may not yield the intended results. It is always better to give a student time to digest the material and have time to work on problems with and without the tutor so that his or her confidence can be built up well before a quiz or test. This leads to the next point.

A tutoring service can be of great benefit when it prepares and encourages the student to solve problems on his or her spare time. Once the student begins to grasp the material, he or she should not simply seek homework help from the tutor but should also seek to complete extra homework problems without the tutor so that he or she can get a better understanding of Algebra. Once a student has worked on problems independently, he or she can then ask for homework help on challenging problems or concepts when meeting with the Algebra tutor.

Need Help On Homework? How Tutoring Can Lead To Success With Trigonometric Functions

Many students feel anxiety when having to deal with trigonometric functions and may want to seek help on homework through online tutoring. These students may have difficulties understanding the six trigonometric functions and their graphs. These functions are sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent. It is also important to understand that these functions do not represent angles themselves but rather functions of angles. In fact, they represent ratios. Online tutoring can be a useful tool not only for help on homework, but also to help clarify the similarities and differences between these functions based on their amplitudes, domains and ranges, periods, horizontal and vertical translations, and vertical asymptotes (when they exist).

It is crucial to remember that these functions are valid only for right-angle triangles. Any help on homework offered by an online tutoring service should focus on the following information concerning trigonometric functions:

The sine of an angle or sin(x) is the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the length of the hypotenuse (or sin(x) = opp./hyp.).

The cosine of an angle or cos(x) is the length of the side adjacent to the angle divided by the length of the hypotenuse (or cos(x) = adj./hyp.).

The tangent of an angle or tan(x) is the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the length of the side adjacent to the angle (or tan(x) = opp./adj.). tan(x) can also be expressed as tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x).

The cosecant of an angle or csc(x) is the inverse of sin(x). For that reason, it can be represented as the inverse of the sin(x) function as shown above, or csc(x) = hyp./opp.

The secant of an angle or sec(x) is the inverse of cos(x). For that reason, it can be expressed as the inverse of the cos(x) function as shown above, or sec(x) = hyp./adj.

The cotangent of an angle or cot(x) is the inverse of the tan(x) function shown above and can be expressed as cot(x) = adj./opp. Alternatively, it can be represented as cot(x) = cos(x)/sin(x).

Once these functions are defined, the student may need help on homework in solving for the measures of angles or sides of right-angle triangles. It is interesting to note that the graphs of these functions are periodic in nature, meaning that they repeat themselves. Further tutoring can help in understanding that the graphs of y = sin(x) and y = cos(x) are the only ones without vertical asymptotes. Conversely, the graphs of y = tan(x), y = csc(x), y = sec(x), and cot(x) all include vertical asymptotes repeated at regular intervals. One cycle of any of these graphs is referred to as a period. Online tutoring should help clarify that the period is the distance on the x-axis needed for the function to start repeating itself again.

The following information concerning the nature of the six trigonometric functions is often least understood by the student seeking tutoring and should be memorized by him or her in order to facilitate progress. The periods for y = sin(x), y = cos(x), y = csc(x), and y = sec(x) are all 2 pi; the periods for y = tan(x) are y = cot(x) are both pi. Online tutoring can also help the student to distinguish between the graphs of sin(x) and cos(x). The graph of y = sin(x) passes through the origin (0, 0) as an increasing function whereas the graph of y = cos(x) has a maximum at the point (0, 1). Tutoring is essential in helping the student understand the difference between these two graphs especially when more complex functions are covered in class. The graphs of y = tan(x) and y = sec(x) both have repeating vertical asymptotes at (pi/2) + n(pi), where n represents an integer. On the other hand, the graphs of y = csc(x) and y = cot(x) both have repeating vertical asymptotes at intervals of n(pi), where n is an integer.

In all, tutoring and more specifically online tutoring, is an amazing tool that any student can use to learn more about trigonometric functions and their characteristics.

Why Academic Summer Boot Camps Can Help Your Child – Home Tutoring Services

]]>

This summer, The Teaching Tutors is offering a series of intensive six-week online boot camps. The featured subjects are Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. Also featured will be an exclusive College Admissions Success boot camp.

The boot camps are unique in that they cover the essentials of each subject in such a way that the student will be prepared to excel in the course once the school year begins in the fall. The Algebra I, Algebra II,Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry boot camps will have two sessions a week, for 90 minutes each. The College Admission Success boot camp will focus on preparing the student for the college admissions process that usually starts towards the end of junior year. This boot camp will be comprised of a one-hour session each week.

The Benefits

Boot camps are beneficial in that they allow a student to learn new material or even review content before enrolling in a particular course. For example, some students may experience difficulty inPrecalculus/Trigonometry or Calculus without a review of critical concepts such as the graphing of quadratic or polynomial functions, the use of the TI calculator’s graphing capabilities, or even an overview of trigonometric functions. Whether a student wants to brush up on existing mathematical skills or even expand on existing ones, the boot camp can prove extremely important to the student in that he or she will be exposed to challenging material on a weekly basis. In other words, the goal of the boot camp instructor is to continuously challenge the student and ensure that he or she understands critical concepts that will no doubt arise during the school year in the given course. The boot camp course is meant to prepare the student to take a given course in the fall and ensure that he or she is a step ahead of others in comprehending difficult subject matter. This is especially advantageous in math and science courses where a multitude of formulas, concepts, and theorems can lead to frustration on the student’s part.

Life After High School

The College Admissions Success boot camp is important in that the college admissions process has been getting consistently more difficult each year. This is due to several factors that the student cannot control. In order to facilitate this process, the student needs to have an understanding of the college admissions process. The boot camp provides this as well as everything the student needs to know to begin building his or her college list. Students will receive a better understanding of what types of campuses and college environments they prefer. Students will also begin developing personal statements and receive a written critique of their first draft by an expert college counselor one week after the end of this boot camp. They will also explore potential areas of interest for majors and careers. As well, tips for college visits before, during, and after the application process will be provided.

From the Comfort of Home

The best thing about the summer boot camp is that it’s completely offered online. This allows the student to integrate a variety of different activities into his or her daily schedule. In other words, the student can still meet with friends, play sports, or even travel with the family while participating in any of the online boot camps. All a student needs to effectively participate is an internet connection since all instruction takes place online. Even if the student were to miss an online session for some reason or other, any class is made available for download so that it can be viewed at a more convenient time!

Home Schooling and Tutoring: Do They Mix?

If you’re thinking of homeschooling your child, or have already been doing it for years, you’re to be applauded. You are taking on a role that many will not or cannot handle. However, even the parents who are fully prepared for all home schooling requires may not know everything. In other words, you might need help from time to time.

It probably seems a bit strange to think about bringing in tutoring assistance when you’re the teacher, but it’s not uncommon. So let’s take a closer look at why you might need tutoring, and where you can find some great resources.

The Basics of Homeschooling

There are a number of reasons that you might feel it’s best to pull your child out of school and teach at home, or begin your child in a homeschooling environment. You may be displeased with the both the increased regulations and slashed budgets of your local public school system and feel your child will not receive the appropriate education as a result. You also may feel that it’s extremely important that your child receive daily one-on-one instruction, which is difficult in a school setting.

Whatever your reason is for homeschooling, you are making a decision to take on quite a job. You will be solely responsible for the academic well being of your child. However, it’s good to know that there are tons of resources and elaborate lesson plans available to help you teach specific subjects. Also, you can find great books and resources in the library, which can help you cut back on personal costs.

Why You Might Need the Assistance of a Tutor

As previously mentioned, the job of homeschooling your child is a big one. This is especially true when you consider that your child will likely have strengths and weaknesses pertaining to certain subjects. If you’re not equipped to dig deeper with your child to help him understand the subject then you may need to bring in additional help to deliver the message more effectively.

Tutors are usually equipped to handle specific subjects and have a wealth of knowledge and resources in one area. So while the tutor is helping your child, you can gain more knowledge in this particular area as well. The more help you’re willing to bring in for your child, the better chance your child has of excelling as you hoped he would.

Online Tutoring Resources

When you think of working with a tutor, you probably automatically picture a person coming to your home to do their job. However, there are tons of additional resources available – particularly online – that can help you fulfill your role as a teacher more successfully.

For instance, there are online tutoring sites that allow you to work with tutors one-on-one, via chatting capabilities, from the comfort of your home. What’s great about most online tutoring services is that you can schedule appointments 24/7. Also, you can download worksheets and take advantage of practice problems right over the Internet.

If you were unsure whether home schooling and tutoring mixed, now you know that they do. It’s just a matter of finding the right tutoring environment for your child based on your schedule and your child’s needs. Once the right formula is found, your child can have the success you’ve always desired.

Just a Couple Tutoring Tips – Online Tutoring Service

A student being tutored in any subject should consider several important tips in order to maximize each session.

Be Consistent!

Tutoring can be extremely beneficial if used as a supplementary educational tool over the course of the school year. That is, the tutor is most effective when he or she can help clarify ambiguous or even difficult topics as they arise throughout the course. This method allows the tutor to work with the student in gradually learning concepts as they arise and help prepare for assignments, quizzes, tests, and finals on a weekly basis.

On the other hand, when a tutor is used only right before a major test or final exam, it automatically puts the student at a disadvantage. This is because mastering a large amount of material or even a semester’s worth of work before a final is no easy task even for the best student! This is not to say that an expert tutor cannot help a student in this situation, but it greatly reduces the student’s chances of effectively retaining newly learned concepts needed to excel.

Keep Notes in Class!

It is very important for students to keep thorough class notes over the course of the school year. Some students may dislike keeping notes since they believe they fully understand the material being presented in class on a daily basis. This attitude is not beneficial in the long run because teachers often times give important clues as to the structure of their quizzes and tests as they teach. The student who neglects to take notes will miss out on this information at a later date (such as right before a test) since he or she never wrote it down! It is also good to know how a particular teacher solves different types of problems since he or she may expect you to solve it similarly on a test. Great notes also help the tutor since he or she can see exactly what the teacher covered every day as well as get an idea of how the teacher organizes the course material.

Keep the Tutor Updated!

As a final note, the student should always strive to keep the tutor updated as to his or her progress via e-mail or other forms of communication. This helps the tutor to better prepare for each tutoring session. With this extra preparation, the tutoring session is maximized and the student can learn as much as possible during the time.

In conclusion, when working with a tutor, the student should maintain a regular schedule, keep thorough notes in class, and communicate with him or her on a regular basis. These actions will aid the student in achieving his or her academic goals in the most effective manner possible.

How to Find the Best Algebra II Tutor – Online Tutoring Service

Finding a qualified and reliable Algebra II tutor can be a daunting task for any parent. This short article will outline what you as a parent should look for when hiring an Algebra II tutor for your son or daughter.

Does the Tutor Really Know the Subject?

The first thing to look for in an Algebra II tutor is an individual who is thoroughly proficient with the material and whose background includes a solid background in Pre-calculus and Calculus. The reason for this is that the tutor will have to understand mathematics well beyond Algebra II in order to guide the student through problems and challenge him or her adequately. This will ultimately prepare the student for upcoming assignments, quizzes, tests, and finals in addition to more complex math courses. For this reason, peer tutoring may not always prove as effective as professional teach-tutoring.

Does the Tutor “Click” with the Student?

It is crucial that the tutor be able to relate to the student. This must be accomplished in two ways. Firstly, the tutor should be able to convey difficult subject matter to the student in a way that he or she will easily understand. The tutor must be able to use technology as well as the graphing calculator to help the student understand equations and inequalities, as well as various types of functions including quadratic, polynomial, inverse, radical, exponential, and logarithmic. Secondly, the tutor must be able to speak with the student in an engaging manner that encourages him or her to solve problems and work independently in the long run. This is achieved when the tutor works on boosting the student’s confidence by strengthening his or her weaknesses which may include fractions, rational functions, or even negative numbers. Unless the student’s weaknesses are addressed, he or she will have a difficult time excelling with more complicated topics in the future.

Let the Tutor Know About Your Child

It is extremely important that the tutor be informed about the student’s strengths and weaknesses before tutoring sessions take place. These may refer not only to mathematical capability but also to possible learning disabilities or any other issues which may affect the student’s learning of new material. Of course, the tutor will learn a lot about the student as the tutoring sessions progress. An expert tutor will be able to gain the student’s confidence and help him or her organize and strategize before attempting each day’s workload.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when looking for the best Algebra II tutor possible, the parent should choose a tutor who is very familiar with the subject matter well and works well with the student. Also, the parent should also be sure to talk with the tutor about the student’s learning style and any strengths or weaknesses he or she may exhibit within mathematics.

Teachers Ratings Publicized

In the Houston Independent School District and many other districts nationwide, teachers are beginning to be rated on how their student’s score on the tests they provide. It seems rational to test teacher’s way of teaching by testing their students on how well and how much they have learned in their class.

A different Sort of Summer School

What’s great is because of the number of summer school “failed” classes; it was much needed to make a change in the summer school math curriculum to better the children’s chances of passing the classes. We all know summer is not the best time to learn; the high heat (depending on your region), the abundance of fun activities that your friends are all doing, the ability to relax and be a kid and not have to worry about anything makes it extremely hard to focus in summer school.

PostHeaderIcon Home Tutoring: Opportunities for Online Tutors

Opting out of the conventional school system and educating children at home is a growing trend, though not without its critics. Although much home tutoring is carried out by parents, some families enlist external help and employ online tutors as a supplement to their own teaching.

Home tutoring is a popular option for families when:

Learners have failed to thrive in traditional schools
Children are unable to attend school because of illness or disability or because they live in a remote area
Families are temporarily living abroad
Parents reject the educational philosophy underpinning locally available services

Online Tutoring has a clear role to play in the home tutoring arena. Though some parents who homeschool are dedicated to accomplishing the task by themselves, and according to their values, many are also open to using online tutors. One of the criticisms of home tutoring is that learners are not exposed to the wider world in the way that ordinary school-goers are. Online tutoring goes part way to addressing that problem. Online tutoring and online learning communities fulfil several of the functions that conventional education offers.

In addition, people in today’s world are busier than ever, and not all parents have the time to devote themselves to their children’s education full-time. Some parents may seek additional help in particular subject areas, or for help in teaching children with different abilities. Online tutors can play an important role in all these scenarios.

Home Tutoring Online

Although some parents devise their own curricula (sometimes within broad guidelines set by the state), many rely on the internet for assistance with courses, curricula and resources. For people seeking online teaching jobs, the home tutoring domain is one worth taking notice of, especially if they have allied experience in this field. Online teaching jobs can be found in course development and materials provision, and in offering online tutoring support to accompany those courses.

In the United States (and some other countries), checks are carried out to ensure that homeschooled learners are progressing suitably and that their education is of an appropriate standard. Online tutors may find opportunities here, in assessing homeschooled children’s knowledge and preparing them for checks and tests.

Homeschooled learners planning to get into university often benefit from assistance from online tutors with test preparation (such as SAT and ACT). For children who are homeschooled in another language, online tutors can assist with English language teaching and English language proficiency testing.
Educators in search of online teaching jobs should be aware that home tutoring differs in some respects from online tutoring, as a supplement to traditional education. Online tutors who are conversant with the issues and challenges that home tutoring presents may find that it is a rewarding avenue to travel.

Tutoring Services Inc. publishes articles & videos of Online Tutoring to help the students of schools, colleges & universities and Online Teaching Jobs for tutors to find resources online & offline
