Teaching French to Learn French

Any teacher will tell you that they learn a lot from their students. Oftentimes, the most successful lessons that teachers convey are those when they’re learning the subject matter at the same time that they’re teaching it. Teaching French to learn French is a fine way to introduce yourself to the language and to help your students learn a new skill. If you homeschool your own children, you shouldn’t let a lack of prior experience prevent you from exploring another language with them. In fact, you should take that as a good reason to try.
When you teach French, you learn French because of having to become an expert. Sometimes, this requirement will drive people to learn more quickly and to take a deeper interest in what they’re learning. This inspiration, like a good cabaret song, is contagious. There are other ways to make learning a language more effective, as well. One of the most effective ways involves employing music and storytelling as ways of making lessons stick better and, more importantly, as ways of generating enthusiasm for the task at hand.
Simple, somewhat repetitive songs are excellent tools for teaching French. To learn from these materials all you need to do is listen. Listening to and remembering songs is natural for human beings. It’s also harder to forget a catchy tune than it is to remember it. Our brains naturally lock onto melodies and melody can serve as a great way to stimulate our minds into remembering words and phrases. If you think about it, there have probably been times in your life when you remembered the words to a song by humming or singing the memory. The idea with language instruction in this way is the same: The song provides the cue to the memory.
Teaching French to learn French may be just the way to make your French homeschool a bit more effective. While children can absorb a lot of information, there is the caveat that you’d better make it interesting for them if you want it to be something they retain. Songs and stories are great ways to make learning French seem like a diversion rather than drudgery. It also tends to foster better retention of what’s learned and better understanding of what’s heard, due to the fact that the language is heard in actual use with an actual context that makes it engaging.

Teaching Music in the Classroom in French

Teaching music in the classroom in French is a good way to teach language skills. For homeschoolers, there oftentimes doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to address all the subjects children need for a well-rounded education. This means that children have to sometimes rush through lessons to make standards; the state’s and your own. You can teach music in the classroom and teach French at the same time with some innovative materials. They help foster an appreciation for both language and the arts, both of which have natural connections to French.
A classroom in French is usually built around the idea of immersion. This means that the students use French exclusively during the lessons, even to ask questions about materials they don’t understand. When music is introduced into the equation, you’ll find that students remember what they were taught more naturally and that they enjoy learning. Learning by rote is tedious, even for adults. Though it is sometimes necessary, the rote method is usually abandoned as soon as something better comes along. Today, there are much better options for teaching French than memorizing long lists of verbs, nouns and phrases.
Running your classroom in French, instead of starting with a lot of boring exercises, can start with a song. It’s amazing how quickly children can memorize music and how quickly they can recall the words they learned via that music. Because of this, more and more homeschoolers who teach a second language have turned toward musical materials to help them achieve their goals. If you want an example of how well this works, consider how many people know the words to “Frere Jacques”, even if they don’t speak a word of French otherwise. It’s the music that made the lesson stick.
You can turn your work toward providing a classroom in French into something much more than a language experience. Learning about music is also very important and learning songs in a foreign language tends to emphasize the structure of both the language and the music to students. Both disciplines use similar terminology—diction, emphasis, phrases, etc.—and this makes them work naturally together. This is one of the most effective ways to teach children language. If you’re not fluent yourself, it’s also a great way to learn the language along with them, making it a truly family-centered experience for everyone.

Teaching Advanced Subjects

Middle school often spells the end of homeschooling for many families. Parents begin to realize that their children’s academic needs surpass those of their own expertise. They find that they are needing to teach in advanced academic areas where they might not really feel skilled. How do parents cope with those feelings of academic inadequacy?
Be aware of your state’s high school graduation requirements As a child prepares to study advanced math, science, and other subjects, you may find that you need some assistance in teaching these subjects. It may be as simple as brushing up on them yourself, or looking to outside resources. However, it is important that you be aware of what your child needs to study and to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses well before you begin the school year.
Come up with a plan to address the areas you need help in yourself You must begin to think of yourself as an academic manager, not the answer man or woman. What is the best resource that you can find to adequately cover this subject? There are several ways to address this:
One way to do this is to purchase a comprehensive subject curriculum. You then have the option to have your child can do independent study or work with a tutor. Alternatively, you may want to learn the subject along with your child, especially if you have younger children that you’re going to need to teach this to later. However, you should be realistic about the amount of time you have if you decide to learn along with your child, especially if you have a number of younger children. It is possible, however, with a good answer key and teacher guide to stay at least two steps ahead of the child as work progresses. I have at least found this especially true with math. It may take some time for you to choose a subject curriculum that works for you, although you can certainly change if it isn’t working the way you had envisioned.
Another option to work through subjects that you are not familiar with is to enroll your child in a class. This can be taught either in a coop format by other homeschoolers who are skilled in the subject or at your local public high school, community college or university. You might also find online courses in the subject you are looking for. Some public high schools are willing to have homeschoolers take individual classes. This can be a viable option if the teacher is willing to work with your student and if you can work with the public school’s administrative requirements. Older high schoolers can often enroll in college classes through various programs as long as they meet the class prerequisites. Some umbrella distance schools (you will pay a yearly fee to use their services, including transcript services) have excellent online courses and often provide skilled teacher feedback in a wide variety of subjects.
My final suggestion is to find a community mentor or tutor for your child. Your child may be able to participate in an apprenticeship to learn about a specific area of interest or may be able to gain experience by working as a volunteer on site with a mentor. Of course, many college towns offer tutors for hire which can be an expensive option, but it is also possible to find people who are willing to pass on their knowledge to your child on a volunteer basis. It takes some investigating on your part, but it is possible.
No matter how you chose to approach advanced subjects, it is important to involve your child in the final decision-making process. A young high school student needs to take personal responsibility for the privilege of a homeschooled high school education and be willing to be actively engaged in the subject matter. Therefore, some of these decisions should be made by the child once you have narrowed down your choices to two or three options that are acceptable to you. A high school student needs to understand that some courses are requirements and other courses may take a more flexible approach as an elective. As a good manager, you can help guide your child to make appropriate choices that are aligned with the child’s real interests and learning style. You will then work together to reach the goal of high school graduation and college admission if that is a desire. These are the years when the skills for future employment and careers are developed, so you should work as a team to make these advanced subjects workable and your child’s high school years meaningful and successful.

Homeschooling Tips For Teaching Biology With Biological Microscopes

The number of parents choosing to homeschool their children are rising. Besides being a very economical option, it allows parents to actively participate in their child’s education. However, some parents worry about their competence, especially when it comes to teaching upper grade courses like the more specialized science of Biology. The mere mention of the subject brings to mind biological microscopes in antiseptic-smelling laboratories and white coats – definitely something that would intimidate a parent without a degree.
But beyond this preconceived notion of difficulty (and perhaps the fear of using biological microscopes), teaching your child high school biology is challenging but definitely doable. Here are some useful tips to help you through the rigors of biological studies with your teen:
1. Get access to a laboratory.
Either you set up one at home, look up possibilities at the local library, or ask your local school district for help, it’s very important to have access to one. You probably don’t need to use it very often, especially if you’re using the nature study approach. But you will definitely need use of at least student-grade biological microscopes. To spice lessons up, try getting the more powerful stereo microscope fitted with cameras or video monitors.
2. Try nature study to keep it fun.
Biology is a boring subject to those who are not especially gifted. And because your child is mostly studying from home, it’s important to fan the interest despite the boring nature of the subject. How do you do this? Be creative!
Instead of just using charts and color photographs, take your teen outdoors and study nature outside. The trip can be a combination of fun and learning if you bring sturdy biological microscopes along with your digital camera, and put learning objectives on your itinerary.
3. Know what to use, when, and how.
Biological microscopes are great tools for learning. But there are other equipment you can use as well. Visuals are very important because recall is better if lessons come in graphic, colorful images. Toss in the fact that the organism appears truly alive under a microscope and it becomes unforgettable to a curious teen’s mind. How light plays on different substances is rarely visible to the naked eye. But with polarized light microscopes, you can distinctively see optical properties of both isotropic (usually liquids and gases) and anisotropic materials (about 90% of solids).
Distance education programs are also excellent tools you may want to add to your repertoire as an educator. The materials in an online course are wonderfully illustrated and you’ll find detailed explanations for each lesson. In biology classes, you’re likely to find clear color photographs of what you’d see under a biological microscope when you’re instructed to do so. It won’t only give you the help you need for homeschooling your child, it also gives you the opportunity to learn. You can use an online program as a tutor and real life laboratory work to see it for yourself.
