Public Cyber Schools Fair Worse Than Traditional Public Schools

The Home-school Legal Defense Association released some statistics that were not very surprising recently. These statistics show families that if they are looking for an alternative to the plummeting test scores and academic mediocrity of the public school system, they should look elsewhere when presented with offers from public virtual schools.
“Overall, in 2005, virtual school students scored comparably to traditional public school students. In 2006 the ISAT scores for virtual charter schools in reading, language, and mathematics showed a consistent drop in grades 3-10. The overall performance of students in these government home-schools fell significantly short of the performance of students in traditional Idaho schools.”
This proves that public charter schools are only serving to perpetuate the intellectual ills that the public school system has so infamously brought upon our children. These programs like to suck in home-school parents with promises of free computers, internet access, and several other perks. Fortunately, we now have statistics that will allow home-schoolers to recognize that these cyber schools are not the answer. Home-schooling may be a more expensive and time-intensive undertaking, but it is worth it for the moral and intellectual security of our children.
Parents who are interested in an online alternative to public school education should seriously consider enrolling in The Grace Academy. It’s a wonderful way for families to provide their children with a fantastic, Godly education at an affordable price. We use a cutting edge online curriculum that will leave you feeling relieved that you didn’t entangle your children’s minds in a public cyber school program

Drug and Alcohol Use in Public Schools

Drug and alcohol use in our public schools is one thread in an enormous tapestry of dangers that public school students face each year. According to a recent survey conducted by the Bureau of Justice, 70.6% of high school students drank alcohol and 34.5% smoked marijuana. That over half of high school students abused stimulants, other opiates, tranquilizers, sedatives, hallucinogens, cocaine, inhalants, steroids, or heroin should be quite sobering to parents concerned about putting their children at risk.
It’s not difficult for high school students to obtain illicit drugs. According to another survey (found on the same page as above), 85% of high school students claimed that they could easily obtain marijuana. 29% of students claimed that they had been offered some kind of illicit drug that year at least one time.
A slightly more subtle influence is creeping into our public schools as well. Legal prescription medication for behavioral and learning disorders such as ADD, bipolarity, and depression are becoming more prevalent than ever before. There is concern that we are unnecessarily overmedicating our children. Problems arise when students who just need some extra attention from teachers or have trouble staying on task are given drugs to keep them in line.
Parents need to understand that they cannot trust their school teachers and administrators to keep their children safe from these serious risks. They are often unaware of illicit drug use and ambivalent about prescribing prescription medication at the drop of a hat. Only you can be sure that your children are able to just say no. There is only one place that parents can ensure the safety of their children: the home. Homeschool students never have to deal with peer pressure and are able to learn according to their own skill level, removing the need for unnecessary prescription drugs like ritalin. The only way that Southern Baptist parents can ensure the safety of their children is through homeschooling. Expecting ones kids to go to the public school without sampling drugs is like throwing them into a furnace and expecting them to come out unburned.

Sex in the Public Schools

The Washington Post states that 900,000 teenage girls become pregnant each year. According to another study, one in four American teenagers contract an STD each year. These statistics naturally strike fear into the heart of every parent, especially considering that more teens are engaging in secular activity at younger ages.
What’s more disturbing is that the public schools are no longer discouraging this kind of activity but encouraging teen sex by providing free condoms and other “safeguards” against STD’s. Abstinence is often taught as an outmoded footnote in sex education programs that encourage students to be safe while having sex with multiple partners. Teen rape is also at an all-time high.
Christian parents should be aware of the sexual climate that exists within public schools. Consider the game “Snap” played by young schoolgirls. The girls wear bracelets of various colors, each color representing some kind of sexual act. The boys try to yank the bracelets off of the girls’ arms. If successful, the boy is guaranteed a sexual liaison featuring that particular act with the girl. If the nature of this game shocks you, consider that the girls playing the game are as young as eleven years old.
Parents need to do something about this. From the moment that students walk out of their homes they are confronted with attitudes toward sex that are completely antithetical to a Christian worldview. Parents should seriously rethink exposing their children to this kind of environment. There is really only one solution, as cultural and social factors are working against teens and preteens 24 hours a day. Only homeschooling offers an environment in which students can learn free from these negative influences. Homeschooling allows your kids to be kids.

Public School Graduates Reject Christ

Will your child believe in Jesus when he or she graduates from high school? Most parents would respond with an emphatic “yes”. These parents might want to reconsider their answer after a recent study by Dr. Brian Ray. Eighty-eight percent of public schooled children from Christian homes reject their faith by the time they graduate high school. On the other hand, Christian homeschoolers are 94% likely to retain a belief in Christ upon graduating a 12-year program.
This shocking statistic should not come as any surprise as public school curricula is designed to teach children ideas that are entirely antithetical to a Christian worldview. To think that students can endure twelve long years of systematic attack on their beliefs is somewhat naïve. Influences on all sides, from the teachers to the administration to the other students prevent students from maintaining a strong faith.
Some parents are under the mistaken belief that their children should be salt and light in the public schools. They feel that pulling them out would be equivalent to hiding their light under a bushel. However, they are taking these verses out of context. The Lord does not expect us to place our children in a dangerous position until they have developed a strong Christian worldview that is able to withstand moral and intellectual attacks.
Jesus said: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.” – Luke 6:39, 40

Decline of Academic Excellence in the Public School

]]>
To most homeschoolers, the decline of academic quality in America’s public school is not news. However, many parents still remain unaware of this far-reaching problem. According to a the College Board, the organization responsible for creating and administering the SAT standardized test, the scores of 2006 high school students are the lowest they’ve seen in 31 years. This decline is surprising considering that schools are spending more taxpayer money than ever before on providing their students with high-paid teachers, new gymnasiums, computer labs, and cafeterias.
As a National Review article points out, the public school has no legitimate competition. As such, they have no economic incentive to increase the quality of their educational program. As long as parents don’t have a choice in their child’s education, the situation will continue to worsen. Homeschooling, although not truly competition due to public school’s government subsidization, is an alternative that many parents have found to work for them. As public school administrators spend more and more on ensuring that their students have a state of the art facility in which to learn, they forget that homeschool parents are doing it better with only a few hundred dollars a year. Homeschool students are proven to score higher on standardized tests than their public school peers.
On top of all this, Christian parents must recognize that regardless of the academic quality of any given school, the public school system is required to teach a humanistic, pro-evolution, anti-morality, anti-Christ worldview. By sending our children to the public school, we are submitting them to an endless stream of worldly lies and encouraging their indoctrination against Christian values. Homeschooling requires effort, but many parents are finding that the endeavor is well worth the moral and intellectual wellbeing of their children.
