Addressing Learning Styles

]]>

If you homeschool, you are probably already aware that there are many different learning styles.  Everyone has their preferred method of learning. Whether your are new to homeschooling or are an old pro, a quick review of learning styles can be beneficial.

The common school of thought recognizes three distinct learning styles.  These are Visual Learners, Auditory Learners, and Kinesthetic Learners.  They may sound like fancy labels, but they are simply different ways of learning.  Most people work best with one learning style, but will find that they may overlap into the other areas.  This makes it important to address all learning styles with every student, while focusing on the style that suits them best.

Visual Learners – These people learn through seeing.  They learn through reading of text, use of pictures, graphs, diagrams, etc.  If your child is a visual learner, you should provide reading material, use body language in your teaching, and instruct your child how to take notes.  Use written instructions, rather than oral and keep background noise to a minimum.  Remember that they memorize using visual cues, so they may prefer to write something down, even on an oral assignment.  Visual learners tend to recall information better if they have read it to themselves silently before reading aloud or discussing the information.  It may be beneficial to provide a visual learner a general outline of the material that will be covered in a discussion or reading.  Using concept maps also helps to provide connections of the material.

Auditory Learners – These are the children who will benefit from reading the text aloud, listening to a story on a tape recorder, or participating in a discussion.  For your auditory learner, you should consider using online stories with audio support, books on tape, or taking turns reading out loud.  Auditory learners function well with wordless background music playing while they study.  It may be beneficial for your auditory learner to use a finger or a pointer when reading to avoid skipping lines.  The auditory learner also benefits from repeating the given directions, performing oral evaluations, and using word association to remember material.    Kinesthetic Learners – Kinesthetic learners learn best through a hands-on approach.  They learn though moving, touching, and doing.  If your child is a kinesthetic learner, you may want to consider field trips, laboratory experiments, and using memory techniques involving hand gestures.  Kinesthetic learners need to work in shorter blocks of time and take frequent breaks while studying.  They tend to need space to read or write, such as laying on the floor or bed as opposed to sitting at a table.  Kinesthetic learners tend to favor action-oriented books.  To encourage your kinesthetic learner, allow for the use of models, projects, or demonstrations as opposed to the traditional written report.

Discovering your child’s learning style will not only benefit your child, but you, the homeschooling parent as well.  Having this knowledge will help you determine what curriculum works best for you and will therefore save you time and money.  Most importantly though, knowing how your child learns will foster confidence and encourage a lifelong love of learning in your child.

Homeschool Math Curriculum And Your Childs Learning Styles

Should we be using a different measuring tool for intelligence? Dr. Howard Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard University, thought so. In 1983 he developed the theory of multiple intelligences, a measuring tool that allows for a multi-faceted look at the qualities and talents that comprise true intelligence. Your homeschool curriculum allows the flexibility of incorporating aspects of this theory into all of your lessons in all subjects.

Using Multiple Assessments

TEST! This word strikes fear into the hearts of many a child. For that matter, a lot of adults experience a mild form of post-traumatic stress when they hear that four-letter word. Testing, or assessment of what your child has learned does not have to be a stomach-churning, fear-inducing event. The use of multiple assessment methods is becoming increasingly popular in both public schools and home schools.

Why Parents and Students Are Choosing Distance Learning Courses Over Traditional Courses!

Edit Article |

]]>

Many parents are not only themselves opting to take classes online but are also starting to sign their children up for study courses that they can participate in online. A major reason for this is that parents are taking more and more control over their children’s education. Distance learning courses allow them to find courses around the U.S. and the world that will enrich their child’s learning experience. With online learning study courses, children can work with expert tutors and teachers who live outside their cities, states and even countries. They can improve their foreign language skills with an educator who is a native speaker and can work with that tutor or teacher easily using new online technology. They can even work with expert tutors who specialize in certain subject areas, including the SAT and ACT, who have proven results helping students achieve their goals and who can easily use interactive online whiteboards to help them as well.

Formal distance learning courses are similar to traditional courses in that they require textbooks, are led by an instructor or homeschooling teacher, easily facilitate class discussions, and require writing assignments, quizzes and tests that are submitted online and then graded by the class teacher. Yet, in distance learning courses, students often develop a rapport with their homeschooling teachers, who because of the nature of homeschooling courses, can provide consistent one-on-one guidance that is not regularly offered in traditional course settings. The convenience of being able to work from the comfort of one’s home instead of having to drive through traffic also makes distance learning courses a great choice for parents who usually have many extracurricular activities to juggle within their households.

Students also often find it less intimidating working online with teachers and tutors during distance learning courses and study courses. Questions that a student may not feel comfortable asking in a traditional environment in front of many other students can be immediately asked during one-on-one conversations with their homeschooling teacher, course facilitator, or tutor. This maximizes the amount of knowledge the student can gain from the course and helps him or her to not continue on to the next course the following the year without fully understanding key concepts required in the next class but never clarified in the preceding one.

Working in an online environment through distance learning courses and study courses also helps improve the student’s technological ability, and many students who enjoy working with technology love that they can engage with other students and teachers around the country and the world. Homeschooling teachers for distance course learning courses, which often provide discussion forums, ensure that students interact with each other. This introduces students to other children their age who live in other places. For example, a child living in California can take a study course with a child their age who lives in Nebraska or perhaps even in England, for example. In addition, parents can sit in on any and all classes and tutoring sessions and monitor them as well as their child’s progress. Sitting in on a class, of course, can be extremely difficult in traditional school settings.

Study courses administered online are becoming extremely popular. More and more universities are developing and expanding their catalogue of distance learning courses, allowing students to take courses at prestigious universities that before they would never have the opportunity to take because they reside far away from the campus.

Distance learning courses can often require a lot of work, but students can manage the coursework and also find that they gain a great deal of knowledge from these courses. High school students can benefit from taking distance learning courses and study courses online and working with university or homeschooling teachers who will help ensure that they receive a thorough education in the subject in which they are studying.
