Home-Schooling Tips For Mothers

Who is a homeschooling mother. There are full-time afterschooling moms and homeschooling moms in every church, town, culture, in most countries. These moms are following the path laid by Adam and Eve, and carried forward for various reasons in various forms through the generations. However, today a homeschooling mom should follow certain steps to make sure the homeschool curriculum stays in its place.

Following are some tips you can follow to help simply the homeschooling process

Know your philosophy or approach.

Why do you want to opt for homeschooling for your kids at home? Is it because of the academics, safety, religious, or philosophical reasons? You need to have a clear answer before you design a homeschool program of your own and educate your children the right way.

Check the local regulations.

Education laws change by town and state. Consult the local school district for knowing what the basic requirements of the home-school programs in your area are. There are some that require a strict curriculum, whereas others specify that particular targets should be achieved by a certain age.

Be organized, patient, and flexible.

Your role would be doubled. You will have to be a parent as well as a teacher, and it is not possible for either to always agree. In instances, where a mom could be a pushover, the teacher on the other hand should expect and demand excellence, as productive education is the goal.

Develop a working relationship with the child.

What works for someone else may not work for you. Both, the student and teacher should be working together towards the goals set.

Find other homeschool parents.

Local community groups or the Internet are a great way for finding other parents and kids for science projects, field trips, support, and advice. However, the more diverse philosophies, the more diverse would be the homeschooling families. Before you get together, discuss the schooling approaches implemented. Besides, this also helps in widening the social circle with the kids interacting with the other homeschooling kids.

Set aside a time and place for academic work.

Many people with home offices believe that its important to have a specific area that keeps away home life from work life. The same applies to homeschooling. Your child and you need a comfortable workspace in a well-lighted place, devoid of all obligations and distractions of the household.

Be willing to Graduate your child to school, if and when he is ready to go.

Since you are the parent, you are the ultimate decision-maker. However in certain areas of life, listening to the desires and needs of the child would help you in making the best choices. As the child grows, he might wish to join a regular school while you would still want him at home. If you two talk about it, you can come to a common decision.

Have a method of evaluation for your child.

Many programs need some kind of yearly or more frequent evaluation of the home student progress. This could be an oral report, a test, project, or anything else.

Homeschooling mothers have raised children who have brought about a change the world. Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein were homeschooled. So were Brigham Young, Joseph Smith, Winston Churchill, Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Woodrow Wilson. They also raised ordinary children who never made the history books, but who could look back and know their moms loved them enough to give up five prized hours of privacy and freedom to teach them to read.

If you decide to home school your child, you can decide on the curriculum according to the methods that you choose to employ in the home schooling process. If the instructions are imparted at home under the supervision of correspondence schools, that too is referred to as home schooling or home education and the curriculum is provided by the supervising school. The term un-schooling refers to a system of study that is curriculum free and the child learns as per his own preferences.

In home schooling, if you choose to employ the classical education method, it would be similar to modern education, as understood in the western world today. In one phase the student learns grammar, logic and rhetoric. Grammar consists of language skills to acquire the maximum possible words, concepts and effective usage. Logic develops the art of proper reasoning in the child. Rhetoric is geared towards criticizing your own work and being able to influence others. In the other phase the student learns maths, music and other subjects.

In home school unit study the curriculum requires the child to learn a number of subjects, to be periodically evaluated through tests for the level of knowledge he has acquired. In this system, the interests of the child are determined and then the subjects to be taught are selected. Once this is done, the parents need to use innovative means and methods to make the learning process more interesting and comprehensible to the child. There are many ready-made unit study curriculums available, but parents can create their own study model, which they think is best suited to enable the child to learn better. The uniqueness of this model is that all subjects are taught via any one subject.

Generally, the subjects included in a model study unit comprise of the art of effective language usage that in turn helps to develop skills in reading, writing and comprehension. The study of mathematics is essential to first assess the level of understanding of the child and then give him lessons to develop problems solving skills. Geography or the social sciences are also included to acquaint the child with location, time periods and inventions. The child learns science to cover his understanding of plants, animals and the input on other related topics. To give a boost to the creativity of the learner, he is exposed to drawing, designing, acting and painting too. The child is taught music and through the music he is able to learn about the cultural backgrounds of places to which the music is associated. History is taught too and can be used to establish a relationship with other subjects. Physical education is another subject that would require the parents to introduce the child to an exercise regime and then try to connect other subjects to the discipline. For example, the child can be introduced to Olympic history through effective physical education training.

Home schooling in the un-schooling model is curriculum free. However, even when informal, parents need to design a curriculum that is flexible. It would vary from one student to the other, depending on the individual requirement, interest and learning ability. It can be modified any time during the period of learning, if found to be in the best interest of the child.

Home schooling is the oldest form of tutoring or educating a child. In fact, the Holy Bible states that fathers are the most natural and appropriate teachers for their children. Home schooling a child means educating your child at home, instead of a public or private school. Home schooling does not mean that the childs standard of education will suffer. In fact the term Home schooling refers to instruction at home, under the supervision of a correspondence school and with a United States Department of Education recognized curriculum, in case the child lives in the U.S.

Considering the popularity of Home schooling, people have started assessing the numerous business opportunities in this field. There are a number of golden business opportunities in Home schooling, starting with that of a home tutor to a provider of home schooling resources.

The home tutoring business is a very good business opportunity for those who have a passion for teaching, but are not willing to go beyond their local community for a job. It is an equally good opportunity for those who want to start a consultancy service that matches tutors and students, within a community. If you love to teach, but is not willing to go beyond the local community to search for teaching options, home tutoring can be a very lucrative home-based business for you.

A successful home tutor must be an expert in a particular subject or subjects and should be well versed with the home schooling curriculum selected by the parents. A formal training or certification is not needed; however, you should be able to relate effectively to the child as well as his parents. It is a zero percent investment and a hundred percent returns business opportunity.

The other business opportunity is to set up a consultancy or a unit that matches the tutors with home-schooling students. For this business, you dont need to have teaching ability at all, but you do need to possess marketing skills and must know how to reach out to home schooling parents and their kids. You can split the tutoring rates with the tutors. For a more satisfied feedback from customers and a thriving home business, you can try a pre-screening all tutors and clients. This would enable you to make the client and tutor comfortable with each other and satisfy both sides.

Finally, another very good business possibility is to provide home schooling resources, mainly selling of old curriculum and the prescribed books. Home schooling resources are very expensive to purchase and parents and tutors keep looking for people who are selling old home schooling resources at cheaper prices. This can be a very good way for parents to earn, those whose children have finished home schooling. It is a good opportunity for consultants too, since they can again act as agents and help people with resources to identify those who need them. A home school resource need not be limited to just the books and the curriculum; you can also create instructional software that can be used as a guide to teach parents about proper home schooling. Then there are other resources available for very small kids, like craft or drawing projects or special educational projects for physically challenged children, which are very popular with many home schooling parents.

Parents who are considering home schooling their young child, sometimes get confused about initiating the process. There are some standards that a parent should set, before beginning home schooling for their young child. A Home school should not be drudgery or parents would never captivate the childs attention for long, to teach him anything important.

Given below are some tips that hopefully will help home schooling parents and kids alike:

Dont make the curriculum a dictator. It is not necessary that your child should do every exercise mentioned in the book. A parent should focus on whatever the child does, since he learns via the fun he has.

Make the more formal lessons like spelling and math, short and teach them with examples.

Dont leave the child with the exercise for too long. Monitor the child during the exercise, as much as possible.

Help your child with the writing, since children do not like to write too much. Many parents discover that children can think much more if someone is there to help them write out their thoughts.

It is imperative for parents to let the child develop at his own speed. Dont burden the kid with too much, too soon.

Switch off the TV during lessons. This will give your child the opportunity to learn and explore more. Encourage the child to explore what interests him the most.

Take the child to the local library. You can also build a small library of your own, with colorful books on math, spelling and interesting stories.

Develop a methodical process to teach your child. Start with easy things and then go on to explain the difficult concepts. If you start the spelling session with Arsonist instead of Apple, your child will definitely not be able to grasp.

Always remember, all work and no play will make your child dull. Allow him to indulge in an activity that he loves. Find out what interests your child the most, it could be reading a story or listening to cassette-recorded stories or playing with building blocks or modeling clay.

There are different ways to learn. For example, simply by touching things, the meaning of Kinesthetic could be highlighted. Listening could help learn the meaning of Auditory, while watching a cartoon or reading could highlight the meaning of Visual. These three, Kinesthetic, Auditory and Visual are aids in the learning process. Children can adopt any of the styles or they can use a combination of all three, unless of course if they are physically disabled. As a parent, you can increase the speed of learning as well as memory by adapting the lessons and curriculum to the childs learning style.

Different educational material appeals to different learners. Workbooks, flashcards, matching games, instruction charts and books appeal to visual learners. Songs and rhymes and instruments please auditory learners and model kits, puzzles, typing and gardening etc are preferred mode of learning for kinesthetic learners.

Try the different educational material available, while teaching your kid. Never compromise with their education and make sure that you dont purchase anything that you cant return.

There has been a steady rise in the number of home-schooling children out of sheer need. One of the reasons being dissatisfaction of teaching methods and another is the distance from a proper school or the safety factor. Many base their reason for home-schooling on religious values as well as the preference to personally monitor the child’s progress. The availability of prepared curriculums to select from has increased. Relevant material to promote home study is specifically designed and made available to suit the requirement of the curriculum. One has the option to choose from a variety of material.

The designed curriculums broadly follow the formal education curriculums where a set syllabus is laid out. In addition, the curriculum includes more fun and joy in the learning method. The basic subjects covered are Language, Mathematics, History, Science and Social Studies. Other subjects like drawing skill and crafts also get included into the curriculum. This way the child gets to generate interest in a number of subjects. The home-schooling child is provided with the necessary material to facilitate his all round development and study. Education for the home-school child is much more fun than the school going child. There are audio cassettes, videos, educational cassettes and programs to follow. Software and internet provide for more educational possibilities. The range of drawing and craft material available too is vast.

Home schooling programs go on to include musical instruments according to the interest of the child. Some children are interested in learning vocal music too. Various other skills are included to cater to the child’s interest. Other activities include skating, horse riding, swimming, carpentry, and gardening. Yet other activities included in the home school curriculum are arts and crafts. This is included in the very young child’s curriculum even as the child needs to improve his dexterity skills. Story telling is very much a part of the home school learning program. Indoor and outdoor games are a very relevant part of learning for the home school child. This involves participation by the whole family.

It would be a good idea to organize combined field trips for the home schooling children in the vicinity. This will help group learning as well. Meeting and being with kids their age will help all round development along with a chance to interact and talk and discuss what they have learnt. They also get to play games and participate jointly in other activities. In addition to home schooling, children can develop interest in activities, which cover services of various types. This could be community service by working part time pertaining to church activities, visiting children who are hospitalized, sports activities and programs etc.

Activities could revolve around visits to the park or zoo and even animal homes. Children could learn how to take care of and feed the animals. They could also help in exercising the animals of the home. Children learn so much more about animals and their care. Certain values too get imbibed and inculcated through home school programs that are not covered in schools. Parents too find a distinct development in their children by providing them with home schooling.

Homeschooling Groundhog Day: Who is Punxsutawney Phil?

Punxsutawney Phil is a 120 year old groundhog. A groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, is a plant-eating member of the squirrel family known to infuriate farmers and drivers in rural areas. But Phil is seemingly no ordinary groundhog.

In 1723, the Delaware Indians settled in the Punxsutawney, PA area. Near Pittsburgh, this small town was named after the Indian word for “sandflies” that populated the area. In 1886 the Punxsutawney Spirit dubbed a particular groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary”. That first year, Phil did not see his shadow, signifying early spring.

Each year since, a groundhog called Punxsutawney Phil (the original Phil died over a century ago of course) is closely observed on “Gobbler’s Knob” so that journalists and hobbyists all over the country can report the next six weeks of weather.

There are other cities that have similar Groundhog Day mascots. For instance, Wiarton Willie is Canada’s answer to Punxsutawney Phil. In 1956, Mac McKenzie held a Groundhog Day party just for fun. The party was visited by a Toronto reporter who was dismayed to find that he did not have much of a story to report. So Willie grabbed his wife’s fur hat, burrowed into the snow, and came out with a prognostication. No one remembers what the prediction was, but a picture of Willie became a famous image in the newspaper. Brandon Bob, Grundoon, Muldoon, and Sand Dune, Balzac Billie, Staten Island Chuck, Gary the Groundhog, Shubenacadie Sam, and other groundhogs are observed in other cities around North America. Punxsutawney’s tourism board insists that these other groundhogs are imposters.

According to the KLAAS Kids Foundation, fire is one of the top three leading causes for accidental death in the home. Teaching your children responsible and safe habits concerning fire is important to your child’s well-being. Here are some helpful tips!

Kids tend to be fascinated by the electrical socket. What is a normal, insignificant household appliance is right within the reach of children and appears to be a lot of fun to explore. Therefore, it is very important to discuss with your child that it is not a toy and that hands and objects should always be kept away from sockets and electrical cords.

Although they make the perfect support for a tent or fort, instruct your children to never place clothes, blankets, or similar items on a lamp. It may not seem like it, but lamps can produce a tremendous amount of heat and may ignite these materials. Find other, non-electrical objects with them that can be used instead!

Tell your children that matches and lighters are not to be used if a parent or other responsible adult is not present. In a similar vein, children should not cook in the kitchen by themselves, as accidents may occur. Make cooking a family affair. Children can learn great safety habits by your example.

Take a look around your own home and see if there is anything else that you can find that would be important to talk to your children about. Do you heat with a woodstove? Where are furnaces located? Every home is different, so make sure you have it all covered.

If a fire were to occur in your home, would your children know how to react? Always know where the fire extinguisher is and make sure that it is accessible. If the fire becomes unmanageable, do not take the time to collect prized items. Leave the house quickly. No material possession is as valuable as your life. It might even be a good idea to map out an escape route. Fires can cause confusion and panic, so it’s good to be prepared.

There is one final thing to keep in mind. If a child were to catch on fire, here is a simple phrase that could save their life! “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” Rolling around on the floor will help put out the fire.

For further instruction and information, get a group together and take a trip to the local fire station! Local firefighters would be more than happy to share with you and your children safety tips and fire prevention. It would be a lot of fun and provide your children with a firsthand experience.

Public school is not the right fit for all students. Sometimes not even private school is the right fit. All over the country and Cincinnati Schools families are looking for a different choice. Increasing numbers of students are making the decision to be pulled out of Cincinnati Schools and be home schooled each year. The image called to mind is usually one of parents teaching their obedient children in the quaint comfort of their own living room. But the home schooling culture, like so much in our world has been modernized and updated to the point where Cincinnati home schoolers are at no real disadvantage to students enrolled in Cincinnati schools.

Can home-schooled children have to same resources as those in Cincinnati Schools? There is a network of home schooling families that provides a unified front and pacing guide for students. The internet has facilitated group workshops, meetings, field trips and more so that home schooled students are given the opportunity to experience social learning excursions in the company of friends. Some teachers from Cincinnati Schools provided these students with reinforcement via the Internet and e-mail. Activities are organized and attended by many home schooled students ensuring that no individual is isolated from his or her peers throughout the school year.

Although Cincinnati Schools actually lose funding with each child pulled out of the district, they are trying to be a part of home schooling success. Cincinnati Schools have set up a web page for parental educators. Parents are in contact with other parents and are fond of setting up monthly online discussions. Questions can be answered and ideas floated. Teachers in the Cincinnati Schools offer methods and share lesson plans with home-schooling parents.

Teachers and specialists in the Cincinnati Schools are listed as resources for any overwhelmed home schooling novice. They can provide answers and guidance to any parent new to the program. Cincinnati Schools have piano instructors, violin players and local art teachers listed, in addition to the on call academic specialists.

There are legal requirements for pulling your child out of Cincinnati Schools. Notification must be sent to the superintendent of Cincinnati Schools and all required data must be filled out explicitly. The superintendent has the right to deny any request he receives, but the district appears to be pretty supportive of this alternative educational effort.

Cincinnati Schools understand and respect parental confusion when choosing an education for their children. It is a sensitive subject and more people every year decide that the grueling 8-hour public school day of Cincinnati Schools is not something they want their child to endure. The safety and comfort of home provides an encouraging environment that elicits and facilitates many aspects of learning. Although there are challenges, and things that home schools won’t get outside of Cincinnati schools, it’s easy to see the allure of this situation.

Ladies and Gentlemen…

In this corner, we have today’s average college costs.

In the other corner, we have the American home schooler who just graduated from high school.

College costs really look bulked up and ready for this fight. The average cost of college in America looks tough to beat.

You are looking at tuition and fees, room and board, out-of-state fees, transportation costs, extra living expenses,and hopefully no legal fees to get bailed out of jail.

The hefty price tag for one year with this seasoned fighter is about $17,000 for the public state colleges.

The scales are really tipping over for the private universities at about $40,000 a year.

The American home schooler has a look of determination in his eyes, though. The word we have from his trainer is that he plans on employing a rather unique strategy.

On the surface folks, this doesn’t look like much of a contest.

There’s the bell!

Today’s average college cost really comes out swinging but this home schooling lad is quick on his feet and a great counter-puncher.

ROUND 1: The home schooler got the edge by using the CLEP testing service to get 30 college credits without paying a dime in tuition and cutting costs by much more than 50%.

ROUND 2: Average college costs is getting winded as his challenger is now using the DANTES testing service in addition to CLEP to attain college credits related to his choice for a bachelor’s degree.

ROUND 3:Things are really looking bad for the university champion as this wise opponent has transferred 90 college credits to a regionally accredited online university.

ROUND 4: The home schooler is the new champion over today’s average college costs with a knock-out by finishing his senior year with on-line classes and is holding his undergraduate high for everyone to see.

The awesome thing about this match is that it is no fantasy.

This strategy is available for all, whether you home school or not.
