Why Most Students Require Math, Science, And English Homework Help

Edit Article |

]]>

Most parents realize that at some point in their child’s education, he or she will need extra help in math, science, and English. However, parents sometimes can wait until there is a crisis at school and the student is struggling so much in a subject that he or she is in danger of receiving a poor grade.

Parents will find it beneficial if they engage the services of a tutor in math, science, and English prior to this point. Tutors who provide homework help to students will not only help build a student’s confidence at school, but will also help them bypass problems that other students without such assistance will eventually have to deal with.

When most students seek math homework help, often it’s because they don’t have a grasp of the class material which leads to difficulties with homework assignments, quizzes, tests, and finals. Also, when certain math deficiencies are not dealt with at an early stage in a student’s academic career by means of tutoring, whether online or in-home, it tends to carry over to upper-level math classes.

For example, when a student has difficulties and needs math homework help in Algebra I but does not seek the services of a tutor, it will usually lead to frustration in more advanced classes such as Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus since the same mathematical skills are needed in these classes but obviously at a more advanced level. In these more advanced classes, the student should not have to worry about seeking math homework help to learn how to add or subtract fractions or work with imaginary numbers.

Therefore, the student should try to supplement math homework help from a tutor with help in understanding new topics covered in class. Ideally, the summer months or the winter break are the best times to secure math homework help to address deficiencies from previous math classes.

Science homework help is also of great benefit. Students are usually comfortable with topics in Chemistry until they have to deal with somewhat abstract concepts such as chemical bonding, nomenclature, and ionization energy. Some also have trouble with stoichiometry since there is no one method for solving these problems.

Physics is another area in which students seek science homework help. Once students have memorized and mastered a set of formulas, they can seek science homework help from a qualified tutor to work on the many word problems presented by the physics teacher.

Finally, some students may want to seek science homework help in Biology. The student should note that science homework help cannot substitute for hard work and many hours or memorization on the student’s part in Biology.

Many students require English homework help. This can include help with improving a student’s reading comprehension or even their writing skills. Unlike math and science, students often don’t realize that they need English homework help until high school when they are expected to begin churning out papers at a faster rate than during elementary or junior high school.

Many students have difficulty transitioning from reading literature in class and writing book reports that present basic information about characters and plot to performing deep, analytical and critical reading. The student is now required to form an opinion (a thesis) about the text and present evidence to support it.

A good tutor can provide English homework help for a student struggling in this area by helping them ask questions about the text, the author, and the time in which the text was written.

The tutor should also help the student become comfortable with formulating a direct response to an essay prompt, brainstorming related ideas, creating a well-thought out outline, and then using this outline as a blueprint for writing the paper from beginning to end.

The more a student practices these steps, the more he or she will become comfortable in performing close, critical reading of texts not just in English classes but History as well.

This is why parents should consider hiring a tutor who can provide math, science, English homework help to their children, especially as they prepare to enter high school.

My Worst Year of Teaching!

We hosted our first “Ask the Author” phone sessions at the beginning of this month and I really enjoyed speaking with several teachers and parents. One call, however, resonated very deeply with me. It was with a teacher from Minnesota who originally had a specific product question. As she explained her situation, however, she made a striking comment. “I am trying my best, but many parents want to blame everything on me!” Her voice cracked as she said it. I felt her pain. Tips to Help Learn French from Audio Materials

Edit Article |

]]>

A lot of people decide to try to learn French from audio materials. There are many different choices available for this pursuit. Some of them employ rote memorization techniques. These are the CDs that you buy that encourage you to say things like “Bonjour Mademoiselle Dupree” over and over again. These are great choices if your need for French never extends beyond saying hello to someone or asking where a good restaurant is. If you want to learn a bit faster, a lot more thoroughly and in a more interesting way, consider narrative materials.

It’s easier to learn French from audio materials that engage you beyond the learning experience. One of the most effective ways to get people involved in language learning is to start telling them stories in the target language. This allows the student to get into the story and to avoid concentrating on the completely natural sense of frustration that oftentimes accompanies learning a new language. It also makes it easier for students to remember the vocabulary and word-usage, as they’ll have a context to remember it in. This is very important as half of learning a new language is finding a way to remember what you learn with every lesson.

You can learn French from audio most anywhere. If your house tends to be full of distractions, consider listening in the car a bit. If you homeschool your children, you can oftentimes teach yourself at the same time that you teach them. By listening to these audio materials together, you can decipher the story and easily recall the new words and rules of language that you and your student learned. Learning with someone is sometimes the best way to teach them. They get the benefit of your experience; you get the benefit of their energy.

There are good materials that allow you to learn French from audio materials that don’t cost a fortune. These are good choices for anyone who wants to learn, whether they’re learning on their own or as a part of their homeschooling of their own children. Learning a second language is a huge advantage in life. It also allows you to better understand many things about the world and the people in it. French is so widely spoken that you’ll have little trouble finding chances to use it, and to enjoy speaking it.

How to help children with Homework: the Basics

Children need love and care. This is no secret. If parents take interest in the homework assignments of their children, the latter show interest in completing their assignments. Parents should show that they value education as well as homework. There are many ways through which parents can help their children with homework. Let us explore some of them.

Fixing a Time Table

Parents should set aside a few hours daily to help their children with their home assignments. This can be done by analyzing their daily work schedule. The number of hours you wish to give to your child depends on his learning needs, his age, type of assignments, level of difficulty and of course, your working hours. Some children might be more productive in the evenings, while others might show more efficiency after an hour of sports. Outdoor activities such as music classes, dance classes, and tennis lessons also take a lot of time. Though all these are crucial for the all-round development of your child, these should not interfere with his homework time.

Choosing the right place

It is important that you choose the right place for your child’s study. Many parents spend more time and money on making the study area fancy. This, however, is not at all important. A study room should be well lit, clean, airy and most important, quiet.

Getting rid of Distractions

Distracting elements like loud music, television, and living room should not be close to the study area. Telephone calls should be avoided by all means during your child’s study time, unless urgent. Some children work efficiently with some kind of background music. The important thing is to analyze different aspects that can make your child more productive.

Availability of Resources

Parents should ensure that study materials such as pens, pencils, writing paper, dictionary, erasers, calculator, paper clips, and world map are available in your child’s study area. Children sometimes complain about not having enough resources to complete their homework. This way they get an excuse not to do their assignments. Providing your child with an Internet connection using a laptop or a desktop is a good idea only if it is not misused. Sometimes, the Internet can provide a lot of information for the completion of a homework assignment. It is important, however, that your child does not start surfing websites that are irrelevant in context to his assignment.

Setting an Example

Often, children imitate their parents and elders. Therefore, parents should cultivate good habits like reading and writing. Educational games, for instance, can be used from time to time. Visiting places like public library, museums, and botanical gardens with your child can have a positive effect on him.

Involving in Your Child’s activities

Parents should show interest in school activities like parent-teachers meet, annual days, teacher’s day, and children’s day. Parents should interact with teachers to understand their child’s needs. Parents who participate in their child’s school activities can contribute more to their child’s growth in and out of school. In case, you have hired an online math tutor or online English tutor for homework help, you should also talk to the online tutoring organization to learn about your child’s progress. K-12 tutoring can be of great help as far as assignment help is concerned. With the recent popularity of homeschooling, online tutoring has become an important part of education. Parents should join hands with educators and online tutors to work out new ways to make homework a more interesting affair for children.

Sat Secrets Revealed: Get 2200+ On The Sat

Strategies for SAT test preparation would be of no use if you do not implement them while writing SAT practice tests, or just solving some SAT pre test questions. Most SAT test takers aim for the 2200 mark. A SAT exam score that’s even close to 2200 is possible. And you do not need an Einstein-like intelligence to achieve that. Here are a few strategies that I find important for crossing the 2200 score on the SAT test.

Need Help On Homework? How Tutoring Can Lead To Success With Trigonometric Functions

]]>

Many students feel anxiety when having to deal with trigonometric functions and may want to seek help on homework through online tutoring. These students may have difficulties understanding the six trigonometric functions and their graphs. These functions are sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent. It is also important to understand that these functions do not represent angles themselves but rather functions of angles. In fact, they represent ratios. Online tutoring can be a useful tool not only for help on homework, but also to help clarify the similarities and differences between these functions based on their amplitudes, domains and ranges, periods, horizontal and vertical translations, and vertical asymptotes (when they exist).

It is crucial to remember that these functions are valid only for right-angle triangles. Any help on homework offered by an online tutoring service should focus on the following information concerning trigonometric functions:

The sine of an angle or sin(x) is the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the length of the hypotenuse (or sin(x) = opp./hyp.).

The cosine of an angle or cos(x) is the length of the side adjacent to the angle divided by the length of the hypotenuse (or cos(x) = adj./hyp.).

The tangent of an angle or tan(x) is the length of the side opposite the angle divided by the length of the side adjacent to the angle (or tan(x) = opp./adj.). tan(x) can also be expressed as tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x).

The cosecant of an angle or csc(x) is the inverse of sin(x). For that reason, it can be represented as the inverse of the sin(x) function as shown above, or csc(x) = hyp./opp.

The secant of an angle or sec(x) is the inverse of cos(x). For that reason, it can be expressed as the inverse of the cos(x) function as shown above, or sec(x) = hyp./adj.

The cotangent of an angle or cot(x) is the inverse of the tan(x) function shown above and can be expressed as cot(x) = adj./opp. Alternatively, it can be represented as cot(x) = cos(x)/sin(x).

Once these functions are defined, the student may need help on homework in solving for the measures of angles or sides of right-angle triangles. It is interesting to note that the graphs of these functions are periodic in nature, meaning that they repeat themselves. Further tutoring can help in understanding that the graphs of y = sin(x) and y = cos(x) are the only ones without vertical asymptotes. Conversely, the graphs of y = tan(x), y = csc(x), y = sec(x), and cot(x) all include vertical asymptotes repeated at regular intervals. One cycle of any of these graphs is referred to as a period. Online tutoring should help clarify that the period is the distance on the x-axis needed for the function to start repeating itself again.

The following information concerning the nature of the six trigonometric functions is often least understood by the student seeking tutoring and should be memorized by him or her in order to facilitate progress. The periods for y = sin(x), y = cos(x), y = csc(x), and y = sec(x) are all 2 pi; the periods for y = tan(x) are y = cot(x) are both pi. Online tutoring can also help the student to distinguish between the graphs of sin(x) and cos(x). The graph of y = sin(x) passes through the origin (0, 0) as an increasing function whereas the graph of y = cos(x) has a maximum at the point (0, 1). Tutoring is essential in helping the student understand the difference between these two graphs especially when more complex functions are covered in class. The graphs of y = tan(x) and y = sec(x) both have repeating vertical asymptotes at (pi/2) + n(pi), where n represents an integer. On the other hand, the graphs of y = csc(x) and y = cot(x) both have repeating vertical asymptotes at intervals of n(pi), where n is an integer.

In all, tutoring and more specifically online tutoring, is an amazing tool that any student can use to learn more about trigonometric functions and their characteristics.

Why Academic Summer Boot Camps Can Help Your Child – Home Tutoring Services

]]>

This summer, The Teaching Tutors is offering a series of intensive six-week online boot camps. The featured subjects are Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. Also featured will be an exclusive College Admissions Success boot camp.

The boot camps are unique in that they cover the essentials of each subject in such a way that the student will be prepared to excel in the course once the school year begins in the fall. The Algebra I, Algebra II,Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry boot camps will have two sessions a week, for 90 minutes each. The College Admission Success boot camp will focus on preparing the student for the college admissions process that usually starts towards the end of junior year. This boot camp will be comprised of a one-hour session each week.

The Benefits

Boot camps are beneficial in that they allow a student to learn new material or even review content before enrolling in a particular course. For example, some students may experience difficulty inPrecalculus/Trigonometry or Calculus without a review of critical concepts such as the graphing of quadratic or polynomial functions, the use of the TI calculator’s graphing capabilities, or even an overview of trigonometric functions. Whether a student wants to brush up on existing mathematical skills or even expand on existing ones, the boot camp can prove extremely important to the student in that he or she will be exposed to challenging material on a weekly basis. In other words, the goal of the boot camp instructor is to continuously challenge the student and ensure that he or she understands critical concepts that will no doubt arise during the school year in the given course. The boot camp course is meant to prepare the student to take a given course in the fall and ensure that he or she is a step ahead of others in comprehending difficult subject matter. This is especially advantageous in math and science courses where a multitude of formulas, concepts, and theorems can lead to frustration on the student’s part.

Life After High School

The College Admissions Success boot camp is important in that the college admissions process has been getting consistently more difficult each year. This is due to several factors that the student cannot control. In order to facilitate this process, the student needs to have an understanding of the college admissions process. The boot camp provides this as well as everything the student needs to know to begin building his or her college list. Students will receive a better understanding of what types of campuses and college environments they prefer. Students will also begin developing personal statements and receive a written critique of their first draft by an expert college counselor one week after the end of this boot camp. They will also explore potential areas of interest for majors and careers. As well, tips for college visits before, during, and after the application process will be provided.

From the Comfort of Home

The best thing about the summer boot camp is that it’s completely offered online. This allows the student to integrate a variety of different activities into his or her daily schedule. In other words, the student can still meet with friends, play sports, or even travel with the family while participating in any of the online boot camps. All a student needs to effectively participate is an internet connection since all instruction takes place online. Even if the student were to miss an online session for some reason or other, any class is made available for download so that it can be viewed at a more convenient time!

These days, in school admissions, management quota system is applicable. Earlier admission was on the basis of merit and the potential of the child. But in the present scenario, if a child does not get admission in a school, then he/she can get admission on the basis of management quota scheme.

Help! I Need a High School Transcript . . . Tomorrow!

By Janice Campbell

“Oh, no! My teenager just told me his college application deadline is tomorrow, and he has to have a transcript! I haven’t even started. What can I do?”

I’ve received this email message, or some variation of it, quite a few times, and I can empathize with the panic the writer is feeling. My first son did the same thing to me, and from that trial by fire, I learned several things. The first was to keep better records for the other boys, and the second was that it’s possible to pull together a transcript overnight if you absolutely must. The key is in knowing three things: the purpose of a transcript, what absolutely must go on it, and the easiest way to pull it all together.

What Is the Purpose of a Transcript?

The primary purpose of a high school transcript is to briefly summarize a student’s knowledge and experience. This needs to be done in a way that allows a college admissions counselor to easily compare your student’s credentials to other applicants’ credentials. This means there are certain formatting conventions you’ll need to follow, as well as some standard information you must include.

A secondary purpose for the transcript is to serve as a marketing tool, just as a resumé is a marketing tool for a job applicant. Your goal is to create a transcript that will spotlight your student and his achievements in the best possible way. With the transcript in hand, a counselor can see not only what your student has studied and how well he has done, but also whether there is a special academic or extracurricular interest that sets him apart from other applicants. An awareness of these two purposes will start you on the path to succesfully creating an effective transcript.

What Should Be Included on a Transcript?

There are three major sections within a transcript, and specific information goes into each section. Let’s look at them.

The first section of the transcript, usually placed at the top of the page, focuses onIdentity Information. This is where the college admissions counselor will look to find out who your student is and where he went to school. This section will contain four major pieces of information.

1. School Name and Address: You can name your homeschool anything you like, as long as the name doesn’t belong to a traditional school. For example, we used “Stagg Creek High School,” named after a nearby creek, but we could not legitimately use “Patrick Henry High School,” which is the name of the public school closest to us. You may not use the name of a curriculum provider as your school name (e.g., Bob Jones Homeschool).

2. Student Name and Address: Use the name and address that the student used when he or she was in high school. Many parents find themselves having to create a transcript long after high school is over because a student who didn’t originally want to attend college has changed his or her mind. The transcript records the student’s information from his high school years, so even if the student has subsequently married, the transcript should reflect her maiden name only.

3. Date of Birth

4. Date of Graduation

The second section is the Course Record section, which forms the body of the transcript. It contains an overview of the student’s course of study. Here is what usually goes in this section:

• Course Record: This is a list of all the classes your student has taken.

• Grades: You can use the traditional ABCDF grades, or if you don’t use grades, you can use Pass/Fail. It’s a lot faster to use P/F grades, but the disadvantage is that you can’t create a grade point average this way.

• Units Earned: A one-semester class usually earns .5 unit, while a two-semester class earns 1 unit.

The third section of the transcript is the Basic Information section, and it contains information that will help the college admissions counselor effectively interpret the transcript and compare your student to other applicants.

• Grading Scale: Check your state law to see if a grading scale is mandated. If it is, use it. If not, you may establish a scale that corresponds with one used by others schools in your county. The grading scale is usually stated as a list in which A=X%-X% and so forth, or more rarely, A=Excellent, B=Above Average, and so on.

• Key to Abbreviations: If your student earns credit through dual-credit courses at a local college or by taking a standardized test, you can use abbreviations next to the relevant course names to indicate this. Define these abbreviations in this space (e.g., AP: Advanced Placement, and so forth).

• Unit Standard: Check your state law to see if a unit standard is mandated. If it isn’t, you can use a basic standard such as “1 unit represents 120 hours of guided study.”

• Awards/Achievements: List items such as earning an Eagle Scout commendation or winning a robotics competition. You need only to include  the name of each award or achievement and the year in which it was received.

• Certifying Signature: As the provider of your student’s education, your signature will certify that the information on the transcript is true and accurate to the best of your ability.

How to Create a Transcript Overnight

Now that I’ve discussed the purpose of the transcript and what should go on it, let’s look at the simplest possible way you can create a transcript. I recommend that you start with a simple vertical format, set up a table, and organize your student’s classes by subject. This will keep you from having to remember exactly when he or she took a particular class and will allow the college admissions counselors to quickly scan the transcript and verify that all entrance requirements have been met. Remember: What counts is whether your student took the class, not when he or she took it.

• Open a new document in the word-processing program on your computer. Set .5″ margins. Insert a table with 7 columns and 50 rows. As you work, you can always add or remove rows to make the table exactly fit your needs.

• Select the first 3 columns in the top row in the table and merge the cells. Type in the name, address, and phone number of your homeschool, plus the student’s graduation date.

• Select the other 4 columns in the top row of the table and merge the cells. Type in the student’s name, date of birth, address, phone number, and cumulative grade point average.

• In the next row of the table, type the following headers: Subject, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Units Earned, and Quality Points (or Grade Points).

• In the first column of the transcript, beginning directly under the “Subject” heading, list core high school requirements (see sidebar), organized by subject. For example, the first four lines of your transcript might have four English classes, the next four lines would list math classes, and so forth.

• Place a check mark in the column representing the year in which the student took the class. His first math class will go under “Year 1,” and so forth.

• When you have all the classes listed, go to the second-to-last row in the table. Select the first 3 columns in the row and merge the cells. Type in your grading scale.

• Select the remaining column cells in this row and merge cells. Type in the abbreviations key, unit standard, and the most important awards and achievements.

• Select the last row of the table and merge cells. Type “Certified by” in this cell. This is where you will sign the diploma when you print a final copy.

If you run out of time at this point, you’ll have a very basic check-off transcript with no grades. If you have additional time, you can improve it by adding grades and a GPA. If you didn’t record grades while teaching each class, you’ll need to reconstruct them as honestly as you possibly can. If there is enough time, use test scores and written work to determine the student’s competence level, and use your grading scale to assign a grade. If you simply don’t have time to do this, just use Pass/Fail or the check-off transcript.

• Use the free online GPA calculator at www.freegpacalc.com to calculate your semester averages and cumulative grade point averages.

• If you’d rather calculate the GPA by hand, assign each letter grade its numerical equivalent, e.g., A=4, B=3, C=2, and so forth. Add together all the grade points and divide by the total number of units earned. No matter how you figure the final grade point average, you can be sure that most colleges will refigure all the transcripts they receive to ensure that each is calculated in the same way.

Normally, if the student is taking honors or college-level classes, the quality points assigned would be weighted, or have an extra half or whole grade point added, so that “A” would equal 4.5 quality points for an honors class or 5 quality points for an AP or college class. The online GPA calculator is designed to easily calculate weighted grades, so you may be able to do this in the time available.

If you have time left after you’ve added grades, you may want to do two additional things. First, although your student has doubtless checked admission requirements before considering the college, double-check the requirements to verify that the classes on the student’s transcript meet or exceed the college’s minimum standards. You should be able to find these requirements, along with the academic profile of the average student admitted, on the college’s website. State graduation requirements are a starting point, but it’s the college’s expectations that your student must meet for admission.

Second, go back and make class names more descriptive. Rather than listing just “English III” as a class name, choose a title that offers specific information about what the student studied. For example, if you list “English III: Survey of American Literature,” this identifies the class as the student’s third year of high school English and clearly states what he studied. Similarly, “Calculus with Trigonometry” is more descriptive than “Math IV,” and “Western Civilization to 1608″ is more specific than “History.” These more descriptive class names will help the college counselor understand the content of each class, which can help him or her verify that your student has met admission requirements.

Creating a transcript overnight is a real challenge, but you can do it if necessary. You can take steps to make record keeping and the creation of transcripts easier on yourself as well. It is helpful to keep simple records and to start the transcript as soon as your student takes his first high school class. Doing it one semester at a time while everything is still fresh in your mind makes it much easier.

Remember that while both record keeping and transcripts are important, the ultimate goal of the high school years is to help your teenager grow into a mature, well-grounded adult with a solid academic and spiritual foundation. Even if the transcript process is a challenge, your teen will benefit from seeing you work through it. Ultimately, I believe that you’ll find homeschooling through high school a time of encouragement and blessing for your entire family.

Sidebars

Core requirements for high school graduation usually include:

English (including literature)  4

Math (Algebra I and higher)  4

History, Government, Geography (also called Social Sciences)  4

Lab Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)  3–4

Foreign Language  2–3

Arts (Visual and/or Performing)  1

Electives  1–3

These numbers reflect minimum requirements in many states. It’s important to find out what your student’s prospective college requires, so that you can fulfill all its requirements before graduation.
