The Abeka Curriculum is one of the most widely used and high quality curricula developed for learning. It is basically a Christian based homeschooling curriculum that incorporates all the teaching methodologies of a traditional classroom. Therefore, it is used by most parents who choose to home school their children. It was developed in 1954 but remains one of the favourites to this day. Over the time, the curriculum has been developed and refined to suit the changing learning needs of children.

The Abeka curriculum is made up of five main subjects: Mathematics, Science, History, English and the Bible. All the subjects are taught from a Christian perspective. The curriculum starts from the nursery grade and goes up to the twelfth grade.

The Abeka Curriculum has many advantages over similar reading materials of its type. The Abeka books are easy to use with a defined set of instruction, so it is perfect for parents who are new at homeschooling. It includes workbooks for children and teacher guides to be used by parents. There are also flash cards and different learning games that you can purchase which make learning more fun for your children.

It is a high quality curriculum so if you are using Abeka you can rest assured that your children are at par with other public or Christian based schools. Moreover, if you are a follower of the Christian faith and want to instil Christian values in your children, then these books would be perfect for you. Moreover, Abeka books have a good resale value and can easily be resold once you are done with the curriculum.

Despite its popularity, the Abeka curriculum does have its cons. Firstly; most of its curriculum sends a Christian message to the children so some parents might not deem it suitable for their home. Also, the Abeka curriculum is quite strict and follows a fast pace and some parents might feel that it puts too much burden on their children. If you feel that your child has a slower learning pace and needs more time to grasp concepts, then Abeka may not be a good choice. It is also more expensive than most homeschooling curricula.

Before you decide to go for the Abeka curriculum, it is important to see if it would be a good option for your child. If your child is a fast learner, loves reading and is quick to catch on to new concepts then you should definitely opt for the Abeka curriculum.

If you decide to home school your child, you can decide on the curriculum according to the methods that you choose to employ in the home schooling process. If the instructions are imparted at home under the supervision of correspondence schools, that too is referred to as home schooling or home education and the curriculum is provided by the supervising school. The term un-schooling refers to a system of study that is curriculum free and the child learns as per his own preferences.

In home schooling, if you choose to employ the classical education method, it would be similar to modern education, as understood in the western world today. In one phase the student learns grammar, logic and rhetoric. Grammar consists of language skills to acquire the maximum possible words, concepts and effective usage. Logic develops the art of proper reasoning in the child. Rhetoric is geared towards criticizing your own work and being able to influence others. In the other phase the student learns maths, music and other subjects.

In home school unit study the curriculum requires the child to learn a number of subjects, to be periodically evaluated through tests for the level of knowledge he has acquired. In this system, the interests of the child are determined and then the subjects to be taught are selected. Once this is done, the parents need to use innovative means and methods to make the learning process more interesting and comprehensible to the child. There are many ready-made unit study curriculums available, but parents can create their own study model, which they think is best suited to enable the child to learn better. The uniqueness of this model is that all subjects are taught via any one subject.

Generally, the subjects included in a model study unit comprise of the art of effective language usage that in turn helps to develop skills in reading, writing and comprehension. The study of mathematics is essential to first assess the level of understanding of the child and then give him lessons to develop problems solving skills. Geography or the social sciences are also included to acquaint the child with location, time periods and inventions. The child learns science to cover his understanding of plants, animals and the input on other related topics. To give a boost to the creativity of the learner, he is exposed to drawing, designing, acting and painting too. The child is taught music and through the music he is able to learn about the cultural backgrounds of places to which the music is associated. History is taught too and can be used to establish a relationship with other subjects. Physical education is another subject that would require the parents to introduce the child to an exercise regime and then try to connect other subjects to the discipline. For example, the child can be introduced to Olympic history through effective physical education training.

Home schooling in the un-schooling model is curriculum free. However, even when informal, parents need to design a curriculum that is flexible. It would vary from one student to the other, depending on the individual requirement, interest and learning ability. It can be modified any time during the period of learning, if found to be in the best interest of the child.

So! You’ve decided to home school your child! Confusion may cloud your mind and it might just get difficult to choose the right curriculum or text for your kid when you’re at the initial stages of course planning. There are thousands of curriculum and texts available for reference. Thus, it is important you choose the right curriculum, which is a difficult task. Having the right information at hand always proves to be helpful, though its not easy to posses it. Most often, people attend symposiums and undertake an extensive study, but are still left with many doubts unanswered.

Most parents who choose to home school their kids have reasons to do so. Often the reason being that parents don’t appreciate the kind of education that schools in the area provide. However, a few tips below could help home schooling parents a great deal.

Understand the requirements: Understanding your child’s requirement is of pivotal importance while home schooling. Always consider your kids taste and preferences. However, the curriculum should cater to the states requirements and also prepare the child for standard tests that are mandatory by regulatory authorities.

Understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses: It is advisable to thoroughly understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses. This shall help you determine the likes and dislikes of your child. Also, it is highly recommended that you buy curriculum material that interests your children. This enables the process of learning.

Scrutinize all resource materials: Curriculum are very expensive. So it’s better if you can go through the contents of all the material resources and select accordingly. Don’t just decide on purchasing a course matter because it has good ways of teaching mathematics or science. Ensure all subjects are incorporated well. Wrong selection of material can land you and your child in a great puddle.

Buy a curriculum that would suit your family culture: If your family loves to travel, buy a curriculum that has many out door learning activities. However, if your family loves watching T.V buy a package that has audio-visuals for your kids to enjoy while they learn.

Your philosophy for home schooling: You will find a variety of home schooling philosophies such as literature based, textbook based, classical, and many more. Choose any one that caters best to your needs.

Cost of home schooling curriculum: Curriculum are very expensive but there are less expensive alternate ways to get them as well. Some parents borrow or photocopy home schooling material. However, if you prefer to buy don’t buy curriculum hastily it could make you feel sorry later. Always survey available materials in the market, cost variations in different markets and finally before purchasing take reviews from people who have used it earlier.

Attend home schooling fairs: You can visit conferences or home schooling fairs that are organized almost every year. At these places, you could get wide variety of literature to choose from. You could also get acquainted to many other home schooling families. Sharing experiences with such families could help you in the long run.

Before you choose a curriculum for your child, give these tips a thought. They may just help you get the right curriculum for your kids.
